Abstract

hirty Mangalarga Marchador foals, age ranging between 12 and 36 months, localizated in Castelo city, Espirito Santo state, Brazil, were evaluated to determine the occurrence of spavin bone juvenile through clinical and radiographic examination. The animal was considered positive by submitting at least one of the following changes in the joints observed in at least one of the contralateral members: narrowing or total loss of the articular space, presence of intra- or periarticular osteophytes, periosteal bone proliferation, lysis or sclerosis the subchondral bone, and ankylose. Of the 30 foals assessed, 83.3% (25/30) had spavin bone juvenile in at least one of the limb, although only 20% (6/30) show lameness associated with tarsus during the clinical examination. The occurrence of spavin bone juvenile in the study population is high, and the training too early associated with mechanical overload of cartilage immature and flaccidity of ligaments may be involved in development of spavin bone juvenile in the population studied.
